My Tips For Preventing Dry Skin In Winter

Even though I live in Southern California, I’m no stranger to dry skin in winter. Central heating, low humidity, cool temperatures—all of these things can cause moisture in our skin to evaporate more easily and lead to itching, flakiness, and dryness. This is why I always double down on two hydrating ingredients for winter skin protection: hyaluronic acid and omega-rich oils.

Hyaluronic Acid: The Great Hydrator

You’ve probably heard of hyaluronic acid—it’s been a hot ingredient in facial skin care for years, but it’s just as effective when used on the body. The cool thing about this ingredient is that it’s able to hold over 1,000 times its weight in water. When it’s applied topically, it draws all of that moisture into the top layers of skin, helping to re-hydrate and plump fine lines.

Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our skin and joints, but our bodies produce less of it as we age. (That’s part of the reason why our skin gets more dehydrated—and fine lines and wrinkles become more prominent—as we get older.)

Omega Oils: The Winter-Proofers

Along with hyaluronic acid, I always load up on body care products with omega oils in winter. Remember how I said that winter weather conditions can cause moisture to evaporate from skin? Oils are one antidote to this, because they help lock hydration into the skin.
